Patriotic Pineapple Baby Quilt
I have not yet participated in the Block Lotto exchange, but I follow the blog for inspiration and patterns. The pattern for May was the Pineapple Blossom block. I chose to do it in red, white, and blue scarp fabric. This small baby quilt is 36 in X 46 in. It is machine pieced and quilted. Here is a close up to show the blocks/fabric. The back fabric is a lovely white on white with large polka dots. (Source: Suture for a Living)
Target drug delivery system as a new scarring modulation after glaucoma filtration surgery
Background: Excessive wound healing following glaucoma filtration surgery is the main determinant of surgical failure, resulting from the activation of human Tenon's capsule fibroblasts (HTFs). To mitigate the excessive wound healing, the topicall use of antiproliferative agents, such as mitomycin C (MMC) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), has increased the surgery success rate, but the traditional administration of these agents can result in a variety of toxicities with nonspecific damage. However, modulation of the wound healing process to prevent excessive fibroblast proliferation and scar formation can play a major role in improving the outcome of surgery. Therefore, the search for alternative modes of drug delivery and new agents is needed to minimize the ocular complications and improve the ...
Controlled activation of morphogenesis to generate a functional human microvasculature in a synthetic matrix
Understanding the role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in vascular morphogenesis has been possible using natural ECMs as in vitro models to study the underlying molecular mechanisms. However, little is known about vascular morphogenesis in synthetic matrices where properties can be tuned toward both the basic understanding of tubulogenesis in modular environments and as a clinically relevant alternative to natural materials for regenerative medicine. We investigated synthetic, tunable hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels and determined both the adhesion and degradation parameters that enable human endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) to form efficient vascular networks. Entrapped ECFCs underwent tubulogenesis dependent on the cellular interactions with the HA hydrogel during each stage of ...
